Before you exchange

A useful reference. Your actual quote may differ.

01

Dollars into yen

USD is the US dollar; JPY is the Japanese yen. Prices in Japan are in whole yen, with no cents, and one dollar buys many yen. Multiply a dollar amount by the USD/JPY rate above, or swap to turn a yen price into dollars.

02

Bring some cash

Cards are widely accepted in Japan, but small shops, shrines and rural buses may still be cash only. Many convenience-store ATMs accept foreign cards; your bank may charge for withdrawals.

03

Keep a reference in your pocket

In the Android app, save the pairs you use, compare several currencies and enter your own exchange rate. Download rates before you leave to keep a reference available offline.

Good to know

About converting dollars and yen.

Should I pay in dollars or yen when a card terminal asks?

Paying in yen is usually the better choice. If you pick dollars, the shop’s payment provider converts the price at its own rate, which is often less favorable than your card’s.

How do I turn a yen price into dollars?

Tap the swap button so the converter reads JPY to USD, then enter the price. The table of common amounts switches too.

How up to date is the conversion?

The timestamp below the result tells you when the rate data was updated, in your local time. The page requests the latest available data when opened and refreshes while in use. It does not stream market prices. If an update fails, it can keep using data less than 24 hours old with a visible notice. Otherwise, it shows an unavailable state.

Will I receive exactly this amount when exchanging money?

Not necessarily. This is an indicative conversion. Your provider may use a different exchange rate and apply fees. Check the final quote with your bank or exchange office before exchanging.
